Moldy Gasket Replacement on a Washing Machine

I was recently called to a washing machine with a gasket that had developed mold. The client had noticed a musty smell coming from the washer, and upon inspection, the gasket was covered in mold. Mold buildup on a gasket is a common problem, especially in high-moisture areas like washing machines.

Identifying the Mold Issue

The mold buildup was clearly visible on the rubber gasket around the door. While cleaning the mold off may help temporarily, it’s a tough issue to get rid of without replacing the gasket entirely. Mold tends to grow in hard-to-reach spots, and even after cleaning, it can come back quickly.

Cleaning Tips for Mold Prevention

If you’re dealing with mold on your washer’s gasket, you can try cleaning it with a mixture of white vinegar and water. Use a soft cloth to wipe down the gasket thoroughly, paying close attention to the folds where mold hides. You can also use baking soda for scrubbing. Running a hot wash cycle with a cup of vinegar in the drum can help eliminate odors.

However, if the mold keeps coming back or if the gasket is visibly damaged, a replacement is the best solution. It’s very difficult to fully remove all the mold without replacing the gasket, as the material can absorb the spores, making it hard to clean effectively.

Replacing the Gasket

In cases where cleaning doesn’t work, I recommend replacing the gasket entirely. It’s a straightforward repair that can restore the washer’s efficiency and eliminate any lingering odors. After replacing the gasket, the washer will work like new, with no more mold or musty smells.

If you’re dealing with persistent mold or a damaged gasket, don’t wait. Replacing the gasket will not only get rid of the mold but also ensure your washing machine runs properly and lasts longer. Let me take care of it for you!
